In
1988 Jon and Gary started a post Cult Figures band. The
band was reluctantly known as The Iron Fish. [they had been rehearsing
as The Silverfish, but a band from South London using that name
started gigging before them!].
They wrote a handfull of songs and went into a studio to record
them. The session got off to a bad start, the engineer was a YTS
lad into dance music who had never recorded a live drumkit before
[let alone a live band]! They were too skint to spend any time
or money rectifying things.
Nikki
Sudden (old friend from the Swell Maps days) roped in Tony Cohen
[sometime Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds engineer] to produce,
and they went back to the studio to re-record on overnight 'downtime'
cos it was cheap.
"It
was only when we heard what Tony could do with the crap material
available, that we wished we had recorded the session properly.
Sadly on the copy I have it still sounds shite!!!! " "Max
Decharne from Gallon Drunk etc, sings on two tracks and played
drums and some keyboards for the Iron Fish. Now he's a high falutin
pop star and author, he may want to sue!!!"
Gary Jones
Max
Decharne started out as the Gallon
Drunk drummer before graduating to lead singer of the Flaming
Stars. (Albums on Alternative Tentacles) He is also an author
and journalist for Mojo and Bizarre magazines. He currently divides
his time between London and Berlin. His published works include...
